When she was very young, the family moved south of Ainsworth, Nebraska to a ranch on the Calamus River where Eula Mae spent her early childhood years. When she was in the 8th grade, the family leased out the ranch and returned to live in Burwell where she graduated from Burwell High School with the class of 1946. She taught school in Loup County at Nunda and Valley View schools and in Garfield County at Sioux Creek. During this time she met and married Leland Scherzberg. After their marriage on February 12, 1949, in Burwell, they moved to Leland’s parents’ ranch on the Calamus River in Loup County where they resided the rest of their married lives. To this union, three children were born: Randall Lee, Sue Ann, and Christina.
Eula Mae had a heart of service, devoting many years in caregiving to members of her family. Her interests included raising Hereford cattle with her husband Leland, gardening, canning, and crocheting. She was also an avid reader. Eula was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, life-long member of the Valley View Ladies’ Club, active in the Loup County Historical Society, as well as serving as 4-H leader for several years.
After Leland passed away on October 19, 1989, Eula and her sister, June, enjoyed traveling together on extended trips across the globe. Eula remained in her home until 2015 when she moved to Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
