Bonnie was born July 7, 1925 in Scotia, Nebraska, the daughter of Otheila
and Robert Mitchell. She graduated from Scotia Consolidated Schools
in 1943 and taught at the Howard County school for one year. In
11944-45 she worked at the Grand Island Ordinance Plant making bombs.
She taught school at Holt County District #233 for two years. In
1946, Bonnie went to Washington State with her Uncle Buck Koewn. She
worked in an outdoor market when she filled fishermen’s boats with
food rations. She was also put to work cleaning turkeys.
In November of 1946, she came back home to the Mitchell ranch in the
sandhills and started dating Bo Conner. She went back to Kearney
State in 1944, renewing her teaching certificate and filling a
temporary teaching position at Fort Hartsuff, later returning to
teach at Holt County #233 while living on the ranch.
Bonnie and Bo were United in marriage on June 2, 1949. She returned to
teaching at Blake School. In 1951 the couple moved to the Clifford
Ranch where she continued teaching at the Clifford School and
Peterson School. Bonnie and Bo lost two children Rodney Joe and Mary
Elizabeth before they had their daughter Cindy in 1957 and Sheri in
1963. While living on the Clifford ranch, Bonnie cooked for many hay
crews each summer and raised her family.
In 1969, Bo and Bonnie moved to Burwell and bought the Dairy Sweet and
called it Bo’s Dairy Mart. In 1975 when they sold the Dairy Mart,
she worked at Henry’s Variety Store, later Ruthie’s.
Bonnie enjoyed many activities, the Rolling Pins, United Methodist Women, a
47-year member of the Legion Auxiliary, charter member of Meals on
Wheels, going to coffee with the ladies and a little gambling with
the slot machines. Quick Hits was her favorite machine. Bonnie always
loved playing pinochle, bowling and was a wiz at crossword puzzles.
Some of her favorite family times were spent at the camper at Dick’s
Homestead Knolls with many fun times fishing on the pontoon and
camping with family, especially her grandsons. She also enjoyed
traveling to Arizona to see family and friends and eating out having
a good cheeseburger.
Survivors include her husband Bo Conner; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Ron
Baillie of Sargent, Nebraska; daughter Sheri Conner of Hastings,
Nebraska; grandsons Heath Baillie of Lincoln, Nebraska and Hunter and
wife Kate Baillie of St. Joseph, Missouri and many family members.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Otheila Mitchell; a
daughter Mary Elizabeth and son Rodney Joe Conner; brothers Dale
Mitchell and Ernie Mitchell; sisters June Luce, Thelma Dulitz, Lois
Sideck and Dorthy Sorensen.
Bonnie’s greatest gift was her kindness and never speaking an unkind word
about others. As a two-time cancer survivor, her strength,
determination and willingness to try for better health as a 92
year-old was an amazing gift.
