Rudolph F. Wabs, 83, of Burwell passed away on Friday, May 11, 2018, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island.

Mr. Wabs’ wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. Pastor Dennis Davenport will officiate. Private inurnment will be held at the Cottonwood Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented by the Burwell American Legion Post #298. Memorials are suggested to the Burwell United Methodist Church and the Burwell Fire Department. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Rudolph was born July 27, 1934, in Holt County, Nebraska to William and Helen (McMillan) Wabs. He spent his childhood in rural Holt County, near Spencer, Nebraska and worked on the Storjohann Ranch as a teenager.

At the age of 21, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served at Fort Chaffee, AK and Fort Hood, TX and was honorably discharged in 1959. While stationed at Fort Hood, he met Elvis Presley.

Rudy returned to Burwell and was united in marriage to Gloria Jean Osborn on July 17, 1960. Rudy worked as a diesel mechanic for Storjohann Implement and then worked at the Loup Valley Alfalfa Mill for 44 years as the maintenance engineer. Upon retirement he worked part-time for the Nebraska Game and Parks at the Calamus Dam, and Fort Hartsuff.

Rudy was a 4-H leader in small engines and participated in cub scouts and boy scouts activities with his sons. His hobbies were fishing, automotive and engine repair projects and refurbishing tractors. Rudy
was a Husker Sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed spending time with family and outdoor activities with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Gloria of Burwell; a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Sherry Wabs of Grand Island; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Jim Lee of Hastings, Kimberly
and Darryl Socha of Hinesville, GA and Erin and Chris Reed of Kearney; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Judy Wabs of Aurora, CO; and two sisters and
a brother-in-law, Mae Jones of Chadron and Adalene and Stan Hill of Scottsbluff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William Scott Wabs; and three brothers, Marvin, Edwin and Carl Wabs.
