Larry Dean Smith, 68, of Burwell, Nebraska died July 22, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Burwell, Nebraska. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell, Nebraska. Pastor Dennis Davenport will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 24, 2018 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Larry was born February 1, 1950 in Burwell, Nebraska to James and Lillian (Wood) Smith.
Larry grew up and attended Burwell High School, graduating in 1968. During Larry’s younger years he like to watch and occasionally participate in rodeos. He liked to travel so much that he visited Yellowstone and South Dakota and actually hitch hiked to Colorado. Larry worked for ranchers in the area and loved the horses and the great outdoors.
Larry was twenty when he was in a car accident where he was paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair which became his steel horse. He would ride around town site seeing and visiting people.
Larry was well known for his black cowboy hat and big smile with a great sense of humor, and if you ever visited his home you would also see he took great pride in his hat collection.
Larry is survived by his brothers and sisters, Sharon Chilewski of Burwell, Nebraska, Judy and Dave Warner of Ord, Nebraska, Bill and Laurie Smith of O’Neill, Nebraska, Terry and Marcie Smith of Burwell, Nebraska and Tammy and Terry Redden of Kearney, Nebraska and nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by parents, Jim and Lillian Smith, brother Jim “Butch” Smith, sister, Patricia, brother -in-law George Chilewski, grandparents Lee and Grace Wood, and Charlie and Allie Smith, along with several aunts and uncles.
